This photo was used as reference for Simkin's lithographs that he made (at least three times) of a Havildar of the 5th. It gives us a better idea of the type of material used to make the tunic. It looks light-weight and cheap. His medal is attached by a very short ribbon. There is a white good-conduct stripe on his left sleeve that is not in the Simkin print (see Bugler and Havildar by Simkin 1895). The green turban looks as if there may well be yellow stripes in it. |
