83rd Light Infantry

Officer and Other Ranks 1918

The regimental depot was at Cannanore at the time of this photo taken in June 1918. The British officers have shirts with ties and the old style Sam Browne belt that has two straps. The officer in the middle has a khaki forage cap in his lap. The Subedar is dressed in a similar way but with a turban. His shirt collar has a button-down collar. The other ranks wear a collarless shirt and shorts and green fringed turbans with kullahs. The men have leather ammunition bandoliers while the havildars and naiks do not. Underneath their waistbelts they have a green kummerbund.
