8th Bombay Infantry

Colonels Uniforms, Pre-1881 (Detail)

The colonel's tunic is scarlet with white collar and cuffs. There is white piping down the front edges and along the hem. The facings are decorated with gold lace and braid. The collar is low as was the style in the 1870s and early 80s and the front corners are rounded. Field officers had the braid in curls below the lace. The cuffs have a double row of lace with braid above and below. There are no badges of rank on the collar as one would expect at this period and no shoulder straps (these may have been removed). The gilt buttons are decorated with VIII within crowned circlet and bayleaf wreath. The sash is crimson and gold and was only worn for levees. The sword-belt is white leather and has a gold and silver clasp. The outer circle is inscribed BOMBAY NATIVE INFANTRY in silver and the gilt centre has a silver crown and figure 8.
