11th Hussars

Marksman's Badge

This actual specimen of marksman's badge belonged to SSM Joseph Brearley whose 1906 Frock is to be seen in the Uniforms section. This badge was also worn on the full dress tunic which he wears in the Soldiers section. The badge is on blue cloth and is made up of embroidered gold wire. The weapons featured have magazines and must represent the Lee-Metford rifle introduced in 1890. There is even a small loop on the left hand rifle to indicate the bolt.

Up until c1920 the rifles were referred to as muskets. There were three different badges for cavalry marksmen: Crossed muskets for marksmen, crossed muskets and star for best shot in each Squadron, crossed muskets and crown for Section commanders of Best Shooting Squadron.
