Drumhorse, 1903

This photo was taken at Curragh in Ireland where the 11th were stationed from 1903. The drumhorse is called 'Mick'. The drummer's busby is of light grey fur and has an officer's style plume. By this time the pouchbelt had been discontinued for other ranks but musicians continued to wear them, with a white leather pouch in which to keep sheet music. The drum banner is of crimson velvet and displays the battle honours gained up to that date. The shabraque, which was formerly blue like those worn on officers' horses, is now crimson. The design is very similar to the officers' shabraques in use before 1855. The special bridle has a crimson over white plume like the officers' throat plume.
