Lt-Col Peter Payne-Gallwey DSO

During the war in North Africa Payne-Gallwey commanded 'C' Squadron and performed particularly well at Sidi Azeiz. He was awarded no less than three DSOs altogether and the American Silver Star. In 1942 he commanded the 1st Derbyshire Yeomanry but returned to the 11th after the war when he eventually took command of the regiment. The years in Berlin were difficult as discipline inclined to be lax but his decisive manner and personal charm ensured that all ranks willingly did his bidding. He was a fine amateur rider and horse trainer, winning many point-to-point races. He died at his home in Lambourn on 20th November 1971 aged 65.
