This is from a group photo of the officers of the 11th just before they embarked at Southampton on 15th August 1914. He commanded the regiment successfully for the first year of the First World War but was wounded at Messines where the 11th did particularly well. He was promoted after this and his place as CO taken by R J P Anderson. Pitman was a keen writer. He published his memoirs of his time in the regiment and was also managing editor of the 11th Hussar Journal.
