11th Hussars

Sabretache, 1876

Prince Albert died in 1861. A design exists, dated 1862, for the sabretache with the Saxe-Coburg arms placed over the cypher but no contempory photographs show this being worn before 1876 when it was officially permitted to be worn on appointments. The detailed picture from the cover of a Bonhams catalogue shows the work involved in making this item. The velvet backing to the battle honours is purple, but maroon for the TREU UND FEST motto.
