D-Day Landings 1944




The 13th/18th were ordered to support the assualt of the 8th Infantry Brigade of 3rd Division on the 'Sword' group of beaches. A and B squadrons in DDs (see Amphibious Tanks) and RHQ and C squadron follwing in LCTs. The DD Shermans were described as "plopping off the ramp into the waves like toads from the lip of an ornamental pond". They swam at a rate of 100 yards a minute which meant that they were in the water for 50 minutes. Some LCTs were engaged in mine clearance and there was a collision causing a Sherman to sink, drowning the crew. Out of 40 tanks, 31 reached the shore. In this photograph, they can be seen on the beach covering the infantry as they wade ashore.
