13th Dragoons

Death of Colonel Gardiner

Colonel James Gardiner was cut down from his horse by a highlander armed with a scythe fastened to a pole. As he fell another highlander split his head open with a battle axe. It is said that this happened within sight of Gardiner's own house, Bankton, and the artist, R Wymer, has placed the incident outside his front gate. In an attempt to sum up the situation a trooper of the 13th, on the left of the picture, is in the act of galloping away.
