Edward Sargeaunt

Edward Sargeaunt enlisted in July 1860 at the tender age of 12. It was quite common for cavalry regiments to use boy buglers and that is what Sareaunt was. By 1878 he had reached the rank of Trumpet-Major. Four years later he was a Troop Sergeant-Major. On 5th December 1888 he became Regimental Sergeant-Major which post he held for 10 years until his retirement. In this photo he wears warrant officer's stable jacket and pillbox. His rank is denoted by a crown on his right sleeve.
