13th Dragoons

Beresford

William Carr Beresford was a British general elevated to the rank of Field Marshal so that he could take over-all command of the Portuguese army. He commanded the allied army at Albuhera and although it was a victory the heavy casualties made it one of the bloodiest battles of the war. He was mentally unstable but a friend of Wellington which helped his career enormously. His misleading report of the battle of Campo Mayor to Wellington was a smear on the reputation of the 13th Light Dragoons which they certainly did not deserve. Two years later, in 1813, he was created, perhaps as some sort of elaborate joke that was lost on him, Marquis of Campo Mayor.
