13th Dragoons

Michael Head

The famous painting by Northcote shows Pope Pius VI and three officers of 12th Light Dragoons in 1793. The officer standing on the left is Lieutenant Michael Head. He joined that regiment in April 1785 as a Cornet and in 1793 exchanged to the 8th Light Dragoons. It is not clear when he joined the 13th, but he became the commanding officer in June 1801. He was still in command when the regiment sailed to Portugal in 1810. The history of the 13th in the Peninsula War makes more mention of Patrick Doherty who succeeded Head as Lieutenant-Colonel in July 1813. Michael Head went on to become a Major-General.
