13th Dragoons

Peninsula

The 13th LD fought a successful action near Ladeora in August 1810 and defeated a Troop of French Cavalry. The uniforms are correctly shown in this illustration. The light dragoon helmet with bearskin crest was worn up until c1812 when the shako was adopted. A blue dolman with buff facings and lines of yellow cord across the chest was worn and grey overalls with a double white stripe instead of the more formal white breeches and knee boots. The war in the Portugal involved many long marches and much hardship which caused wear and tear on uniforms. The supply wagons could not always keep up so the appearance of the soldiers was perhaps not as neat as is shown.
