Mounted Private 1900

Richard Simkin produced this image of a private at the beginning of the Boer War. It is of a 14th Hussar in marching order in South Africa. The khaki tunic has steel shoulder chains but photos do not agree with this. His ammunition bandolier is hung on the left shoulder and the haversack and water-bottle hang on his left hip. His horse carries the usual heavy items, like the Lee-Metford carbine with tethering stake attached to the bucket holster. Also carried are mess tins, cloak, blanket, spare boots and the sword attached to the near side of the saddle.
