Francis Pemberton Campbell


Francis Pemberton Campbell joined the 79th Highlanders as an ensign on 3 Nov 1854 and fought in the Crimea at Sevastopol and the Redan. He went with the regiment to India and fought in the Indian Mutiny. From Sep 1858 he was with the 1st Punjab Cavalry and then with Colonel Horsford's force on the frontier of Nepal from Jan to June 1859. He joined the 14th Hussars in 1863 as a captain and reached the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel on 29 April 1875. On that date he was appointed commanding officer of the 14th. The following year he went with the regiment to India, but on 14 June 1876 he died after a short illness, of acute dysentry, at Bangalore. He was 39 years old and his death was greatly mourned by his fellow officers.
