Thomas Ernest Lynedoch Hill-Whitson

Thomas Ernest Lynedoch Hill-Whitson of Parkhill, Perthshire, was educated at Harrow and gazetted on the 18th May 1894 as being a second-lieutenant in the 3rd Battalion Black Watch dated 6th May. Two years later he transferred to the 14th Hussars in the same rank. By 1898 he was a lieutenant, and a captain in 1901. He went out to the Boer War in 1900 as a lieutenant and the photo shows him in that rank dressed for embarkation to South Africa. He is mentioned in the regimental history as leading a squadron that chased off Boers who attacked the 1st Cavalry Brigade on 12 Sep 1900. He commanded the regiment from 1915 when they were in Mesopotamia and, like many in the 14th he succumbed to sickness. He survived and retired with the rank of lieutenant-colonel.
