James Massey Dawson was born at 87 Gloucester Place, London on 2 May 1803. He joined the army at the age of 21, purchasing his commission as a cornet in the 14th Light Dragoons on 4 Nov 1824. He was promoted to lieutenant on 12 Dec 1826, and captain in August 1832. He sold out on 5 Jan 1837. He posed for this portrait by Dubois Drahonet some time soon after June 1832 when the regiment changed from blue coats with silver epaulettes to scarlet and gold. |
