French Hornist 1763

The illustration by Brian Fosten is based on a painting by Morier at Wilton House. The green coat has light grey facings and red lace on the buttonholes. There is also a red edge to the collar and red epaulettes. The helmet has a red turban instead of green worn by others of the regiment. His sword belt is worn under the coat and is of tan leather.

The regiment was made up of 6 Troops. Each Troop was commanded by a captain, with a lieutenant and two cornets. Additionally, there was a quartermaster, one farrier, 2 drummers, two French hornists, 4 sergeants, 4 corporals and 98 privates. The drummers and hornists were mounted on grey horses which had red ribbons in their plaited manes and red and green rosettes on the brow-band. After 1764, the drummers were required to exchange their drums for trumpets. It was stipulated that the trumpeters and hornists from each troop should form a regimental band, unmounted, and incorporating clarinets, bassoons and fifes.
