Lance Cap Plate post-1856

The cap plates worn by other ranks of the 17th Lancers were brass, elaborately decorated with the regimental badge of the deaths head and motto, Victorian Royal Arms, sprays of laurel and oak leaves, and the four battle honours: ALMA BALACLAVA INKERMAN and SEVASTOPOL. These honours were awarded on 16 Oct 1855 but the regiment went to India after the Crimea and stayed there until 1865, so would have had little opportunity to wear the dress lance cap until they returned home.
