Band 1904

This photo was taken at Piershill Barracks, Edinburgh. The band includes several very young musicians and a wide variety of wind instruments. The bandmaster sits in the middle, in officers’ undress uniform although his status was Warrant Officer class 1. He is named as W H Richardson and was a recently arrived addition to the regiment. The bandsmen all wear the Broderick cap worn at a rakish angle. The time-beater’s drum is central to the photo, with the kettle drums either side. The added battle honours on the drum banners are visible here.
