5th Dragoon Guards

Sabretache Badge c1823 - c1850

The first known badge to be worn on the undress sabretache was adopted around 1823, after the 5th Dragoon Guards were awarded the two battle honours for VITTORIA and TOULOUSE on 14th Feb 1820, to add to SALAMANCA and PENINSULA which were awarded in 1814 and 1815 respectively. This officer's example is gilt with a white metal running horse in the centre. Similar types were worn by other ranks as can be seen in the painting of Corporal John McCain by Dubois Drahonet c1831. The back view of this soldier shows the badge being worn on his sabretache and his pouch.
