Musicians and trumpeters wore jackets of the reverse colour to the rank and file. The 5th Dragoon Guards, having green facings the trumpeter's jacket here is green with red facings. This tradition came to an end in the Peninsula War when it was realised that trumpeters in their distinctive jackets were an easy target. This illustration by Bob Marrion is based on details from a contemporary tailor's book. |
