5th Dragoon Guards

Trumpet-Major and Senior NCOs 1903

This detail from a group photo shows the trumpet-major on the left of the picture wearing a distinctive pill-box cap which has a gold cap-band and extra lines of gold braid that the other NCOs do not have. This type of cap was worn by musicians and trumpeters of other dragoon guard regiments but in a slightly different style. The lines of braid end at the top edge. The centre of the cap has a gold braid button with a braided pattern around it. The lower ranked trumpeters and musicians had a yellow cap-band with yellow braid. The photo of the band 1897 shows this style of cap but it is difficult to see it clearly.

He has a scarlet serge frock tunic with green velvet collar and cuffs, and blue trousers with a yellow cloth stripe. His rank is displayed on his right forearm, being four gold chevrons point upwards with crossed trumpets above, and a silver running horse badge on the stripes. His medals are the Queen's and King's Boer War, good conduct and the Queen's Diamond Jubilee medal. The man seated on the chair is the Regimental Quartermaster Sergeant who did not serve in South Africa.
