5th Dragoon Guards

Trumpeter and Trooper 1908

This photo was apparently taken in Dublin in 1908. The trooper on the left is on guard duty and has his sword drawn, carried at the slope. His scabbard is attached to the white sword slings and clipped onto the two rings either side of the scabbard. This method of carrying the sword dated from 1885, and from 1891 the sword was attached to the saddle when mounted. Both men wear blue trousers for dismounted duties. When mounted they would have blue breeches and knee-boots. The trooper has a red and white plume on his brass helmet while the trumpeter on the right has a red plume. The yellow cord aiguillettes on the trumpeter's left shoulder appear as dark in this early photo, and the dark cords and tassels on his trumpet are green. Although this photo is dated 1908 the white pouch-belt worn by the trooper indicates that it may be earlier. The belt was discontinued for all ranks except trumpeters and musicians in 1902.
