5th Dragoon Guards

Drumhorse c1908

The regiment returned from a four-year tour of duty in South Africa in 1908 and were stationed at Dublin. Between the years 1908 and 1912 the drumhorse was a grey. A photo of 1912 shows a dappled grey horse but the artist, Simkin has drawn a more symbolic white horse, bearing in mind the regimental badge. From 1908 the drumhorse had a blue shabraque based on the design of the officer's shabraques that had been discontinued c1897. The bridle is quite ornate and a red throat plume matches that on the helmet. The drum banner has scrolls that are more of a pale blue-green colour than the actual green.
