Egypt

The 7th Dragoon Guards were commanded by Lt-Col Colin Campbell. This informal pose at the famous Sphinx shows various ranks of the regiment wearing scarlet tunics and dark blue breeches. The main concession to the climate was the wearing of a white helmet instead of the gilt or brass dress helmet. There was also an issue of tinted sun-glasses which gave rise to the comment that they looked like 'a bunch of red-coated burglars'. One man standing at the front towards the left of the picture has light-coloured breeches. He may be an officer from the 2nd Brigade which consisted of 3 Bengal Cavalry regiments, all of whom wore khaki uniforms.
