7th Hussars

Drumhorse c1880

In this photo the drumhorse is the same skewbald as in the 1874 painting. The drum banners clearly show PENINSULA on one side, LUCKNOW below the circular garter, and WATERLOO half hidden on the other side. The garter is inscribed QUEEN'S OWN HUSSARS and the Victorian crown above is embroidered in coloured wire and velvet. The drummer is a corporal and has two good-conduct stripes on his right arm. These were sewn on the left arm after 1881. The busby at this time was somewhat taller than that worn in the 1890s.
