7th Hussars

Drumhorse c1898

Simkin produced coloured prints of all the cavalry drumhorses in the 1890s. They were published, in many cases, a few years after he made the initial paintings so the date is difficult to pin-point. Here the drumbanner has acquired two new battle honours: ORTHES which was granted on 2nd May 1893, and DETTINGEN granted on 20th Sep 1882. So the image dates after 1893. The 7th were in India from 1886 to 1895 and in Rhodesia from 1895 to 1897. They did have a depot at Canterbury during this time and the drumhorse may well have been kept there. The drummer wears a busby which was not worn in India or Africa.

The horse's bridle is carefully drawn, including the stirrup reins. The white throat plume was evident in the 1880 photo as well as this print which indicates that the officers also had a white plume on their bridles. This was in contravention of Dress Regulations which in 1874 and 1883 stipulated that the throat plume on hussar officer's bridles should match the busby-bag colour (scarlet). However, the 1891 and 1900 DR give the 7th a white plume. There is no shabraque on the hind quarters, only a rolled greatcoat.
