7th Hussars

Field Marshal Sir John Stanier GCB MBE

John Wilfred Stanier joined the 7th Hussars after the war, in 1946, while they were still in Italy. He served with them in Germany and Hong Kong. He would have commanded the 7th but the amalgamation in 1958 prevented it. Instead he commanded C Squadron until he took command of the Scots Greys in 1966. In 1962 he organised and took his squadron on adventure training to an island in the Baltic. They were required to make a detailed map of the place but found when they arrived that the whole island was a nudist colony. He was the first Field Marshal and head of the army who had not seen active service.
