The Helder peninsula in 1799 was a low lying piece of land that was reclaimed and protected by dikes. Some of these were deliberately breached by the French to flood the countryside and impede the Anglo Russian lines of communication. The coast on the seaward side was covered in sand hills which made movement of cavalry very difficult. |
