General John Lawrenson



Lawrenson joined the 13th Light Dragoons as a Cornet in November 1818 but exchanged to the 4th Dragoon Guards in 1822. Five years later he joined the 17th Lancers as a Captain and stayed there until he was appointed Lt. Col. of the 13th in June 1845, commanding the regiment until 1848. He was a Major-General by 1860 and was appointed Colonel of the 8th Hussars in 1865 and then Colonel of the 13th in December 1868. He served as a cavalry commander in the Crimea, succeeding Sir James Scarlett as Commander of the Heavy Brigade.
