The uniforms of the British army changed radically in 1855. The Crimean War had proved the unsuitability of the heavily braided and tight fitting hussar jacket. The new uniform required a change in the sabretache which, in the 8th Hussars, now had a narrow gold lace edge, of shamrock pattern, but only covering three sides. The overall effect was not as pleasing as before because too much red background showed through. |
