Robin Carnegie was educated at Rugby where he sustained a back injury which caused him problems throughout his life. He joined the 7th Hussars after the war, while they were still in North Italy. When the Korean War broke out he was keen to see active service so he became attached first to the 8th Hussars, then the 5th Inniskilling Dragoon Guards which relieved the 8th, and then the Shropshire Light Infantry. He attended Staff College and then joined 16th Para Brigade in Cyprus. He went on to Jordan with the Paras and in 1960 rejoined his regiment, which was now the Queen's Own Hussars, in Aden. He spent time with the Gurkhas in 1965 but in 1967 he became commanding officer of the QOH and proved himself to be one of the best COs they ever had. He held staff positions in the UK and BAOR in the 1970s, the last one being Director of Training at Old Sarum but he was unable to make his mark there. He retired at the age of 57 probably because of the recurring back pain which had been aggravated by parachute landings. He was tall with a slight stoop, and had a self-effacing manner. He was awarded the OBE in 1968 and made KCB in 1978. He was appointed Colonel of the Queen's Own Hussars in June 1981.
