Clement Delves Hill

Clement Delves Hill was the sixth son of Sir John Hill 3rd Bt, and the younger brother of General Rowland Hill. He and his other brother Robert both fought at Waterloo, as did Rowland. Clement was born on 6 Dec 1781 at Hawkstone Hall, Prees, Shropshire. He joined the Royal Horse Guards on 22 Aug 1805 and served in the Peninsula War as ADC to Rowland. He was wounded in that campaign and at Waterloo where he fought as a captain, he was more seriously wounded with a sword that pinned his leg to the ground.

He commanded the Blues from 1823 to 1837 and then continued his career in India. He commanded the Mysore Division of the Madras Army from 24 Nov 1841. Major General Hill died in India on 20 January 1845 and was buried at Honavar. A monument called the Colonel Hill Pillar commemorates him there. He was not married.
