Alfred Cholmeley Earle Welby


Alfred Welby was born on 22 Aug 1849 in Denton, Lincolnshire. He was the youngest son of Sir Glynne Welby 3rd Bt. He was educated at Eton and entered the army in 1867 as an ensign in the 85th Regiment. He exchanged to the 90th Cameronians and again to the Scots Greys as a captain on 26 Aug 1876. He was a major on 21 Oct 1885 and lieutenant-colonel on 5 July 1892. He commanded the Scots Greys from that date, for 4 years. He was also a politician standing for several Tory seats before being elected as MP for Taunton, a seat he held from 1895 to 1906. He died on 18 May 1937.
