Amalgamated Drumhorse

The week of amalgamation ceremonies and rehearsals took place in Edinburgh during the end of June and beginning of July 1971. At the end of June the Queen presented The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards, which was to be formed on 2 July, with a drumhorse, Trojan. The Greys had had a black drumhorse since the beginning of the 20th century and although the band were now a dismounted marching band the tradition of the drumhorse continued. The drum banners of the two regiments are seen here either side of Trojan and the drummer is mounted up, wearing a reconstruction of the white goatskin cap introduced in the 1880s, and the leopardskin apron of the dismounted bass drummer.
