Lieutenant-General Andrew Nugent


Andrew Nugent was born on 30 Mar 1834, the son of Lieut-Col Patrick John Nugent and Hon Catherine Vesey. He joined the army on 17 Dec 1852 purchasing a cornetcy in the Scots Greys. He was promoted to lieutenant without purchase on 8 Dec 1854, after the battle of Balaklava. He was also at the battle of Inkerman, Tchernaya and the siege and fall of Sevastopol. He purchased the rank of captain on 8 Feb 1856 and 10 years later was promoted without purchase to major, on 31 Mar 1866. He purchased the rank of lieutenant-colonel on 3 Feb 1869 and commanded the Scots Greys until 21 June 1880. He was the last 'Crimean' officer to command the regiment. He attained the rank of lieutenant-general and was appointed Colonel of the 7th Dragoon Guards on 30 April 1892. On 10 Feb 1900 he exchanged to the colonelcy of the Scots Greys, an appointment he held until his death on 10 July 1905. He did not marry. He was JP , Deputy Lieutenant and High Sheriff of County Down and lived at Portaferry, County Down.
