Lord Arthur Hill, 2nd Lord Sandys


Lord Arthur Moyses William Hill was born on 10 Jan 1792 the son of Arthur Hill the 2nd Marquess of Downshire, and Mary, Baroness Sandys. He joined the army in 1809 as a cornet in the 10th Hussars, promoted to lieutenant in 1810 and leaving the regiment in 1814. He was in the Peninsula War as a Captain, fighting at Vittoria and Pampeluna, and at Waterloo as ADC to Wellington. He transferred to the Scots Greys at some point, and with the rank of lieutenant-colonel, commanded the regiment from 1832 to 1837. He was also MP for County Down in 1817, a seat he held until 1836 when he succeeded to the title 2nd Baron Sandys from his mother. He reached the rank of lieutenant-general in 1854 and was Colonel of the 7th Dragoon Guards from 18 Mar 1853 to 25 Aug 1858 also Colonel of the Scots Greys from 26 Aug 1858 until his death on 16 July 1860 at Ombersley Court. The painting, by William Salter, shows him in the uniform of an officer of the Scots Greys. There is a memorial to him at Ombersley Church.
