The bridles of officers' chargers were decorated with regimental devices. The bit had this badge attached either side. The Scottish motto on the garter is in gilt metal with a gilt Guelphic crown above. This crown was sometimes used for badges in Queen Victoria's reign. After 1902 it was replaced by the King's crown. The centre of the boss has a silver dome with the Thistle. An identical badge was used on a heart-shaped leather breast-piece for the martingale. |
