Drumhorse, South Africa 1904

The Greys stayed in South Africa after the Boer War and were stationed in Stellenbosch, Cape Colony until their return home in 1904. This photo was taken there in 1904. There would have been ceremonial gatherings to impress the locals and full dress, including white goatskin cap, was worn by the Scots Greys, with the band and drumhorse leading the parade. A local skewbald horse was used and the drummer, who does not appear to be Drummer Booth, looks as if he is having trouble directing the animal with the stirrup reins. The drum banner is the new red one and the shabraque is the reconstituted item with the embroidered pieces sewn onto red cloth.
