The Drums and Band Postcard c1908

The Oilette postcards produced by Raphael Tuck in the early 20th century had many paintings by Harry Payne. This is a good example of his work and shows the drumhorse Billy with the band of the Royal Scots Greys in Edinburgh. The colour of the banners and shabraque show up vividly on the black horse. The bridle with its red horsehair throat plume is very striking. There are differences, however, with the photo of Billy at Norwich in 1904. There are no stirrup reins, and the drummer, who is not Lance-Corporal Vile, has a pouchbelt instead of a drum carriage.
