Sergeant Trumpeter and Drummer 1920

The caption to this published photo is titled 'Trumpet-Major and Drummer of the Royal Scots Greys'. Actually the title of trumpet-major was downgraded to sergeant-trumpeter in 1881 and not restored until 1928, but perhaps the regiment continued with the trumpet-major title unofficially. The rest of the caption says that the musical ride at the Royal Tournament of that year would be given by the Royal Scots Greys, accompanied by four trumpeters and the drummer. There is no date to the photo but another photo of the sergeant-trumpeter taken at the same time, with a similar background, has the date of 1920. His uniform includes gold aiguillettes and cord on his cuff, and the drummer has yellow cords. The trumpet banner is blue with coloured embroidery, and the drum banners are red. The black bearskins have red plumes that bend over the top. The white goatskin cap was not reintroduced until c1936. The grey drumhorse is not named and would have had a short career as the regiment went overseas to Egypt later in 1920 and did not return until 1928.
