Pipe Band 1970

The Pipes and Drums of the Scots Greys march behind the regimental band at Meadowbank stadium in Edinburgh for the Commonwealth Games of 1970. This photo looks like a rehearsal as the stadium is empty and the band are in no.1 dress. The Pipes and Drums of the Scots Greys was officially started around 1950 but there had been pipers in the regiment since before the war. At Meerut in 1926 they had a mounted pipe band for a performance at the Horse Show there. The Pipe Band of the Greys was at first unofficial but King George VI was Colonel-in-Chief of the regiment and he encouraged their development. At the end of the 1940s the band was recognised by the War Office and the King granted them the privilege of wearing the Royal Stewart tartan. In 1951 the official strength was 6 pipers but they actually had 8 pipers, a pipe-major, four side drummers and a bass drummer.
