Distribution of the Eagles

The Emperor Napoleon stands imperiously with hand outstretched to give his blessing, so to speak, to the Eagles of his regiments. The famous painting which hangs in Versailles is by Jacques Louis David the neo-classicist and ardent admirer of Napoleon. The painting depicts the event on 5 Dec 1904 and was completed in 1811. It caused the painter considerable trouble as Napoleon was keen to show himself and his entourage in the best way possible for posterity. The flags attached to the Eagles have the diamond shaped white centre with red and blue corners.
