Queen's and Squadron Guidon c1855 & 1882

This illustration is titled 'The Regimental Standard and a Squadron Standard' which is somewhat confusing as the crimson regimental standard was formerly known as the King's Guidon and the blue squadron standard was known as the Second or Regimental Guidon. The two guidons here are from different periods but only the Queen's Guidon has been renewed because the blue Squadron guidon had become obsolete. According to the Note at the base of the illustration it had not been carried since 1859. The battle honours that can be seen on either side of the central device are BALAKLAVA and SEVASTOPOL which were awarded to the Greys on 16 Oct 1855. They were also displayed on the Queen's Guidon but this was replaced after 1882 when five more battle honours were added. On the left side are BLENHEIM OUDENARDE and DETTINGEN, and on the right side are RAMILLIES MALPLAQUET and BALAKLAVA. The Eagle badge was added to the guidons after 1838 when permission was granted, and this is placed at the base of both guidons. On the Queen's guidon WATERLOO is on a scroll above the Eagle and SEVASTOPOL is below it. On the blue Squadron guidon WATERLOO is below the Eagle.
