Standard Bearer Sergeant-Major

The date of this photo is known but must be c1897. The published photo had a line-up of 5 men of the Scots Greys in different orders of dress and this man was labelled as 'Standard Bearer Sergeant-Major'. The guidon, it seems, had been referred to as a 'Standard' in line with the flag of other cavalry regiments. The other men in the photo wear pouchbelts but the SSM here, has a guidon belt instead. It is decorated with the Scottish motto and Thistle in an oval shape and there is a device below this, perhaps the Eagle. He carries what looks like the 1882 guidon judging by the space between the battle honours. The Sergeant-Major is a veteran of the 1885 Camel Corps expedition to the Sudan, and other campaigns.
