John Frederick Sales Clarke

John Frederick Sales Clarke joined the Scots Greys as a cornet on 3 Dec 1818, exchanging from the 4th Dragoon Guards on half-pay. He purchased his cornetcy on 11 Oct 1821 and then bought his rank of lieutenant on 4 Oct 1822. He was promoted to an unattached company on 21 July 1825. On 26 July 1827 he exchanged to be a captain, purchasing his majority on 30 Dec 1837. He then purchased the rank of lieutenant-colonel on 2 April 1841, taking over command of the Greys from Colonel Charles Wyndham. He went on half pay on 6 Nov 1846. The portrait is interesting from a uniform point of view because the dress pouch-belt is the 'modern' type, worn up until this day. It has the St Andrews star pattern instead of the ess and vellum worn in the 1830s.
