General Sir John Bloomfield Gough GCB


Sir John Bloomfield Gough was born on 24 June 1804. The son of the Very Reverend Thomas Bunbury Gough and Charlotte Bloomfield. He was a nephew of Field Marshal Lord Gough. He attended the Royal Military College and was commissioned in 1820, reaching the rank of Captain in the 3rd Light Dragoons. He was on his uncle's staff in China, Gwalior and the Sutlej and Punjab campaigns. He commanded the Cavalry Brigade at Mudki and Ferozeshar, and was severely wounded at Sobraon. When he was a colonel he was ADC to Queen Victoria and later appointed Quartermaster General of the troops in India. He was appointed Colonel of the Scots Greys on 31 Jan 1864 and remained in that post for 27 years until his death in 1891. He was married three times. First to Carmina Hithins in 1840, second to Margaret McGaskill in 1846, and thirdly to Elizabeth Arbuthnot in 1850. He had 5 sons and 2 daughters. He was appointed GCB on 29 May 1875. He died on 22 Sep 1891 aged 87. The photo shows him wearing civilian clothes and his GCB badge pinned to his chest. It was taken in 1890 with a group of officers of the Greys. The officer with the large moustache on the left of the photo is Colonel Maberley the CO. On the other side of him is Major Welby who was CO from 1892 to 1896.
