Private, World War One

This lively wartime Oilette postcard shows some aspects of the Greys uniform around 1916 when the steel helmet was issued to replace the khaki forage cap on the Western Front. The brass buttons and brass 2 D on the shoulder straps can be seen, but under the circumstances the men would probably not have been expected to keep them polished. The artist, Harry Payne, has had trouble with the shape of the helmet but being a cavalryman himself he would have been correct in all other details.
